Essay Contest - $1,000 | Deadline March 31, 2012

Essay Contest. The Society functions as a non-profit, non-denominational, non-political organization, incorporated under the laws of the State of North Dakota. Its aims are educational and social. Its purpose is to bring together people who are interested in discovering the common history unique to Germanic-Russian ethnics and to preserve the many elements of their rich heritage.

The Society collects, lists, and catalogues published materials and personal documents that tell of the European migrations and exodus to the United States and Canada and also of the pioneer life on the plains. These materials can be read and researched in our library at 1125 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, ND 58501. This library at our International Headquarters in Bismarck contains many books and magazines dealing with our ancestors.


Essay Contest Eligibility:
The GRHS Essay contest is open to all students attending public, private, parochial, home schools, and to students attending accredited universities, as full time undergraduate students. The subject of the paper must be related to the German Russian Heritage and must be the contestant's original work. A contestant does not need to be of German Russian heritage to enter the contest. Previous contestants are encouraged to enter each year; however, resubmission of previously judged work is not permitted.

International winners will be chosen in each of the following categories:
I. Middle School...6th thru 8th grade.
II. High School...9th thru 12th grade.
III. High School Senior
IV. University or College Undergraduate, limited to undergraduate students enrolled full-time in degree-seeking programs.

Topics may include any and all aspects of German Russian heritage, including:
* Personal family history.
* Cultural anthropology of the German-Russians.
* Historical analysis of the reasons for the Diaspora of the German-Russians.
* German-Russian history in the Americas and Canada.
* German-Russian history in Russia, the Soviet Union, loss of Soviet citizenship and slave labor camps, and slave labor in England & France after World War II.
